Heavy equipment and machinery movers: CNC machine and control cabinet on machinery skates

Hamilton runs on steel, fabrication and food processing, and its plants need industrial machinery and heavy equipment moved without stopping the rest of production. Rigging-Busters’ machinery movers and riggers plan each lift, rig and skid the machine, haul it and set it in place across Hamilton, Stoney Creek, Burlington and the surrounding area, from a single press brake to a full coil-processing line.

  • Industrial equipment only: no household, office or commercial furniture moves.
  • One crew from rigging to millwright work, with heavy hauling, set-in-place and levelling in between.
  • Quotes in 2–4 business hours.
  • Where we work: the whole city, from the Bayfront to the Mountain, and out to Burlington, Grimsby and Brantford.

Crew moving a large industrial machine on steel cribbing with a heavy-capacity forklift

Heavy machinery moves are engineered, not improvised. An older Hamilton plant can hide pits, trenches, crane rails and floors poured decades ago, so we confirm the machine’s weight and centre of gravity, its lift points, the slab’s capacity and the exit route first. The method follows from those numbers: skates, a hydraulic gantry, jack-and-roll, or a lift by a licensed crane partner.

Done that way, the move protects the machine, the building and the shipping dates your customers are counting on.

How We Move Heavy Machinery in Hamilton

Seven steps take a Hamilton machine from its old footprint to its new one:

  1. Machine and site details: make, model, weight, dimensions and photos, both addresses, access and target dates.
  2. Walk-through: doors, floor loading, pits, ramps, crane rails, lifting points and the way out of the building.
  3. Plan and paperwork: method, crew and schedule, plus every road permit the load needs: City of Hamilton permits for city roads and an MTO single-trip permit for provincial highways, which Ontario asks carriers to request at least 5 business days ahead.
  4. Shutdown and isolation: your licensed electrical contractor cuts and locks out the power, and your maintenance crew drains and caps air, water and process lines.
  5. Rig, skid and load: rated slings, skates, gantries or jack-and-roll lift the machine off its foundation and onto the trailer, where it is secured.
  6. Heavy hauling: on a trailer sized for the load, with permits and escorts for oversize trips.
  7. Set, level and hand over: placed on the new footprint and levelled for reconnection, with installation by our millwrights if you need it.

Equipment Our Crew Uses

  • Skates and dollies for rolling machines along aisles and across bays
  • Hydraulic gantries where the overhead crane is too small or out of reach
  • Jack-and-roll systems to raise heavy presses and mill equipment in stages
  • Heavy-capacity lift trucks for loading, unloading and placing machines
  • Lowboy, flatbed and tilt-deck trailers for heavy equipment hauling
  • Crane lifts by licensed crane partners for outdoor picks and roof openings

Heavy Equipment Hauling and Permits

We haul machinery to and from Hamilton on trailers sized to each load and look after the paperwork. Oversized or overweight trucks on City roads need a City of Hamilton oversize permit: standard oversize applications can take up to 5 business days, and overweight ones take longer. Single-trip permits are graded by weight, with superloads starting at 120,000 kg, and a project permit covers repeat moves for up to 6 months. Provincial highways such as the QEW and Highway 403 need an MTO oversize permit, and Ontario asks carriers to apply at least 5 business days before the trip.

The City’s truck route by-law shapes the route. Trucks with more than four axles are barred from downtown and other parts of the lower city, including Main Street East, King Street East, the Claremont Access and Concession Street, and streets such as Bay Street North take trucks in the daytime only. If the truck or a partner crane has to stand in a traffic lane while we load, the City needs a lane occupancy permit with at least 5 days’ notice; a full road closure needs 2 weeks.

Millwright Installation and Levelling

Our millwrights take over once the machine is down: they set it on its pads or anchors, level and align it, and hand it to your electricians for reconnection. Equipment that has to be split for the road, such as a long press line or a slitter, is taken apart at the old site and rebuilt at the new one, anywhere from Ancaster to Stoney Creek. New machines that only need installing, with no move, are covered on our millwright and machinery installation in Hamilton page.

Typical Hamilton Jobs

Our Hamilton machinery movers handle the equipment this city is built on:

  • Stamping presses, press brakes, shears, slitters and coil-handling equipment for steel service centres and fabricators
  • CNC machines, machining centres, lathes and boring mills
  • Food and beverage processing, baking and packaging lines
  • Welding, cutting and fabrication equipment, including plasma and laser tables
  • Heavy equipment hauling to and from Hamilton, the port and the rest of Ontario
  • Mothballing, decommissioning and auction removals: see plant decommissioning in Hamilton

Steel is changing fast here. In September 2026 Stelco said it would idle its Hamilton finishing operations, the cold mill and coated departments, and concentrate production at Lake Erie Works in Haldimand County (Global News). Idlings and consolidations like that leave lines to mothball, remove or relocate. For a whole line or plant, see factory and plant relocation in Hamilton.

We build each schedule around your production calendar and the City’s permit timelines, so equipment is down for as short a time as possible.

Machinery Moving Cost in Hamilton: What Affects the Price

Hamilton machinery moving is priced job by job, once we have the details or have walked the site. These factors set the price:

  • The machine: weight, size, centre of gravity, and whether it ships whole or in sections
  • The building: doors, ceiling height, pits, docks, stairs and what the floor can carry
  • The method: skates, gantry, jack-and-roll or a partner crane, whose time is billed with minimum hours
  • The route: distance, City and MTO permits, escorts, and truck-route limits in the lower city
  • The extras: dismantling, crating, storage, reassembly, levelling and millwright installation
  • The timing: shutdowns, nights and weekends

One price for rigging, hauling and set-in-place makes quotes easy to compare, and our machinery moving cost calculator gives a rough range first. All prices are in Canadian dollars (CAD).

Why Hamilton Plants Hire Us

  • Machinery only: plant equipment is the whole business, never household goods.
  • Start to finish in one crew: rigging, heavy hauling, setting, levelling and millwright work.
  • Heavy-lift methods for mill and press equipment: skates, gantries and jack-and-roll, with crane lifts through licensed partners.
  • Routes that work: City permits, truck-route limits and escorts planned before the trailer arrives.
  • Short downtime: moves fitted into your shutdown window.
  • Quick answers: quotes within 2–4 business hours.

A good fit: stamping presses, slitters and coil lines, CNC machines, food lines, plant moves, decommissioning and auction removals, and dealers who need delivery and installation.

Not a fit: house, office or commercial furniture moves, pianos and safes, crane rental, and equipment rental or repair.

Machinery Moving in Hamilton: FAQ

How much do machinery movers cost in Hamilton?

There is no standard rate: each Hamilton move is priced on the machine’s weight and size, access at both ends, the lifting method, distance, permits and timing. Truck-route limits in the lower city and City permit times can add planning, and shutdown or weekend work changes the crew cost. Use our Heavy Lifting and Moving Calculator for a rough range, then send the details for a firm quote.

Do you haul heavy equipment to and from Hamilton?

Yes. Heavy equipment transport and hauling are part of the job: we rig the machine out, load it on a trailer sized for it, truck it in or out of Hamilton and set it at the other end. Oversize loads need a City of Hamilton permit on city roads and an MTO single-trip permit on highways such as the QEW and the 403, and we apply for both.

Do I need a City of Hamilton permit for an oversize or overweight load?

Yes, on city roads. Hamilton issues oversize permits for oversized or overweight trucks, and standard oversize applications can take up to 5 business days, with overweight ones taking longer. Single-trip permits are graded by weight, and superloads start at 120,000 kg. If a truck or crane must block a lane while loading, a lane occupancy permit needs at least 5 days’ notice.

Can you move stamping presses, press brakes and coil-handling equipment?

Yes. Steel service centres and fabricators here rely on presses, press brakes, slitters and coil lines, and we move all of them. We confirm the weight of each section, block the slide, remove the dies and check the pit and foundation, then move the press on skates, gantries or jack-and-roll. Large presses travel in sections, and a licensed crane partner handles any overhead lift.

Do you move small machines or a single press?

Yes. A single small press, a CNC machine or one piece of process equipment is a normal job, whether it moves within the plant, to another building or onto a truck. Send the make, model, weight and a few photos of the machine and the way out, and we will choose the method and send you a quote, usually within 2–4 business hours.

Do you install and level machinery after the move?

Yes. Our millwrights place each machine on its pads or anchors, level and align it, and leave it ready for your licensed electricians to reconnect. Machines split for transport, such as a press line or a slitter, are taken apart at the old site and rebuilt at the new one, whether that is across Hamilton or elsewhere in the region.

Can you decommission or clear an idled or closing plant?

Yes. Idlings such as Stelco’s 2026 shutdown of its Hamilton finishing lines leave equipment to mothball, remove or sell. We rig out, load and remove machinery for closures, mothballing and auction buyers, and we work to your removal dates; equipment can go to another plant, to a buyer or onto trucks for shipping. Details are on our plant decommissioning page for Hamilton.

Which areas around Hamilton do you serve?

The whole city: the Bayfront and North End, Stoney Creek and the Red Hill Business Park, Ancaster, Dundas, Flamborough and Waterdown, the Mountain and the Mount Hope airport area. Around it we cover Burlington, Oakville, Milton, Halton Hills, Grimsby, St. Catharines, Brantford and Haldimand County, and we move machinery between Hamilton and Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Kitchener-Waterloo, Cambridge and Guelph.

Can a heavy truck reach a plant in the lower city or on the Mountain?

Usually, with planning. Hamilton bars trucks with more than four axles from downtown and parts of the lower city, including Main Street East, King Street East, the Claremont Access and Concession Street, and some streets take trucks in daytime only. A truck may leave the truck route only by the shortest path to its site, so we plan the trailer, axle count and route before moving day.

Do you move household, office or commercial furniture?

No. We move industrial machinery and plant equipment only: presses, CNC machines, production lines, transformers and generators. For a house, office or commercial furniture move in Hamilton, a residential or commercial moving company is the better choice. If you have a machine, a line or a whole plant to move, send us the details and we will plan it.
