Large enclosed machine standing on machinery skates, ready to be rolled out

Rigging-Busters handles the heavy end of lab and medical equipment moving in Barrie and the rest of Simcoe County. Our crew rigs, hauls and sets in place what laboratory movers and hospital porters cannot lift: steam sterilizers, walk-in and reach-in environmental chambers, ultra-low freezers once they are empty, fume hoods, test rigs, process tanks and skids, and the chillers, generators and switchgear behind a hospital or lab building.

Hospitals, college labs, aerospace and defence suppliers, food processors and research tenants call us direct; lab relocation services and contractors bring us in for the lifts. For a research lab relocation, we take the units that need rigging and leave the benchtop to the packers.

Lab Equipment Moving Services in Barrie, Step by Step

Whether it is one sterilizer at a hospital or a floor of chambers at a college, moving laboratory equipment runs in this order:

  1. Equipment list and drawings: make, model, weight and size of each unit, its present location, its new room, and any lab transfer or decommissioning form your organization uses.
  2. Site walk: door openings, corridor turns, freight elevators, ramps and floor loading at both buildings, plus where the trailer can stand.
  3. Season, permits and timing: spring load limits on City and County roads, a City of Barrie or County of Simcoe permit for oversize loads, an MTO permit on Highway 400 or 11, and a time your site signs off.
  4. Shut-down by your people: units emptied and cleaned, cabinets decontaminated, and power, water, gas and steam disconnected by your licensed electricians and plumbers.
  5. Rigging out: skates, a hydraulic gantry or jack-and-roll lifts the unit off its base; it is then strapped, braced and protected for the road.
  6. Transport: on a trailer suited to the load, during the hours the permit allows.
  7. Setting: each unit is placed on its layout marks and levelled, ready for your trades and the vendor to reconnect and start it.

Gear Our Barrie Crew Brings

  • Low-profile skates and dollies, with runners and boards to protect hospital and lab floors
  • Hydraulic gantries for rooms with no overhead crane
  • Jack-and-roll and cribbing for tanks, autoclaves and other dense units
  • Heavy-capacity forklifts for docks and yards
  • Trailers chosen for each load, a lowboy for tall units
  • Our crane or a partner crane when equipment must come out through a roof or wall opening

Permits, Banned Hours and Spring Load Limits in Barrie

A City of Barrie oversize load permit covers City roads; it is applied for online and is not issued until the City and Barrie Police Service have both signed it. Clearance heights on the route are checked on site 48 hours before the move, and oversize loads cannot travel on weekdays from 6:30 to 9:00 a.m. or 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., or between half an hour after sunset and half an hour before sunrise. The County of Simcoe requires its own permit above 2.6 m wide, 4.15 m high, 12.5 m long (14.65 m for a semi-trailer, 23.0 m for a combination) or Highway Traffic Act weights, and takes at least five business days. From March 1 to April 30, load-restricted City and County roads are limited to 5 t per axle, which matters for heavy lab equipment.

Setting, Reconnection and Start-Up

Our millwrights level and anchor each unit to the manufacturer’s instructions. Because electrical work for hire in Ontario requires a Licensed Electrical Contractor (O. Reg. 570/05), your licensed electricians reconnect power, while your plumbers handle water, gas and steam and the vendor commissions the unit. Biosafety cabinets need testing again after a relocation under the Canadian Biosafety Handbook, so the certifier decontaminates them first and tests them at the new site.

Hospitals, Colleges and Research in Barrie

Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre’s long-range plan would double the size of its Georgian Drive campus with a new nine-storey inpatient tower and add a South Campus on an 83-acre site at Yonge Street and Innisfil Beach Road in Innisfil, starting with an outpatient health hub. Georgian College’s Barrie campus runs a Centre for Health and Wellness with nursing labs, science labs and community clinics. When labs and wards like these are refitted or expanded, their sterilizers, freezers and plant equipment move in stages, and that is where medical equipment movers who rig are needed.

In September 2026 the City of Barrie moved zoning changes forward to attract defence, security, aerospace and advanced manufacturing firms, and the province’s Innisfil Heights employment area on Highway 400 is planned for manufacturing, processing and research uses. Test chambers and quality labs follow that kind of growth.

Research Lab Relocation: Who Does What

In a full lab move, your staff or lab relocation specialists pack chemicals, samples, glassware and benchtop instruments, your safety lead signs off the decommissioning, and calibration technicians check instruments at the new site. Our lab equipment moving services cover the heavy units in between. MRI, CT and X-ray systems are de-installed and installed by the OEM, and we can rig and move them under the OEM’s direction. See MRI and medical imaging rigging in Ontario and, for radiation therapy, LINAC rigging in Ontario.

Looking for general equipment relocation services for machines, presses or a production line? See our machinery movers in Barrie, industrial rigging services in Barrie or factory and plant relocation in Toronto, which also covers Barrie.

Storage: if lab moving dates slip, crated or skidded units can be stored until the new space is ready. Samples, reagents and anything needing power stay with you.

What Moving Heavy Lab Equipment in Barrie Costs

Each job is priced separately, from your list or a site visit. The cost comes from:

  • The equipment: weight, footprint and how top-heavy each unit is
  • The buildings: elevators, stairs, door widths and floor strength at both ends
  • The calendar: spring load limits from March 1 to April 30, banned weekday hours, and evening or weekend work
  • The lift: skates, gantry, jack-and-roll, or our crane or a partner crane, with crane time included in the quote
  • The road: distance, City, County and MTO permits, and escorts where needed
  • The extras: crating, partial dismantling, storage and millwright levelling

When you compare medical equipment movers or laboratory relocation services, make sure each price covers rigging, transport and setting, and names who disconnects, cleans and restarts the equipment. Estimates are free; for a first figure, try the Heavy Lifting & Moving Calculator.

Why Simcoe County Labs, Hospitals and Plants Hire Our Riggers

  • Built for weight: rigging gear and methods sized to heavy, delicate units.
  • No hand-offs: one crew rigs, hauls, sets and levels, with our crane or a partner crane if a lift calls for it.
  • Quick quotes: back within 2–4 business hours.
  • Scheduled around you: shutdowns, evenings and weekends, and around the spring load season.
  • Permits sorted: City, County and MTO paperwork and police sign-off arranged.
  • Insured: liability and workers’ compensation insurance (WSIB in Ontario), with a certificate of insurance on request.

A good fit: hospitals and long-term care sites, college and research labs, aerospace, defence and food plants, and contractors in Barrie and Simcoe County, plus laboratory movers and lab relocation companies that need riggers for the heavy pieces.

Not a fit: hot tub moves, glass and glazing, treadmills and gym equipment, hospital beds and home medical equipment, medical supply deliveries, IT or computer moves, household and office moves, and specimen couriers.

Every day a sterilizer or chamber is offline costs a hospital or lab, so we fix the dates around your last day of use and your restart.

Barrie Lab and Medical Equipment Moving: Questions and Answers

What kind of laboratory and medical equipment can you move?

Anything that needs rigging rather than a cart: sterilizers and washer-disinfectors, environmental and climate chambers, ultra-low freezers once emptied, fume hoods and biosafety cabinets, test rigs for aerospace and defence suppliers, process tanks and skids from food plants, and building plant such as generators and switchgear. Glassware, chemicals and small instruments are packed by your team or laboratory movers.

What measures do you take to ensure the safe transportation of my equipment?

Each unit is weighed or checked against its nameplate, the route is walked, and the method is chosen before moving day: skates, a gantry or jack-and-roll. Floors and doorways are protected, the unit is braced on a trailer that suits it, and in winter we plan for ice at the docks. At the new site it is set on its marks and levelled.

What if I need to store my lab or medical equipment temporarily?

If the new room in Barrie or elsewhere in Simcoe County is late, crated or skidded units can go into storage until it is finished, and we bring them back and set them in place. Samples, reagents and anything that has to stay powered or cold remain with your own staff rather than in storage.

Do you need a permit to move heavy lab equipment in Barrie?

Only for oversize loads. A City of Barrie permit is signed by the City and Barrie Police Service, clearances are checked 48 hours before, and loads cannot move in weekday rush hours (6:30 to 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.) or at night. County of Simcoe roads need a County permit (at least five business days), and Highway 400 needs an MTO permit.

Can heavy lab equipment be moved in Barrie in March and April?

Yes, with planning. From March 1 to April 30, load-restricted City of Barrie and County of Simcoe roads are limited to 5 t per axle, so heavy units may need a lighter axle setup, a route on unrestricted roads or Highway 400, or a date outside the season. Tell us early if your move falls in spring and we will plan the route around it.

Do you handle full research lab relocations in Barrie?

We take the heavy part of a laboratory relocation: sterilizers, chambers, freezers, hoods, cabinets and process equipment, from rig-out to levelling at the new site. Your staff or laboratory movers pack chemicals, samples and benchtop instruments, and your safety lead signs off the decommissioning. We schedule our crew around theirs so the lab is out of service for as short a time as possible.

Can you move equipment inside an operating hospital in Barrie?

Yes. Hospital moves are planned around infection control, contractor sign-in, protected routes and elevators, and evening or weekend hours that keep patient areas quiet. Tell us the hospital’s requirements in your quote request and we will build them into the plan, together with the timing of any disconnects by your licensed electricians and plumbers.

How much does it cost to move heavy lab or hospital equipment in Barrie?

Each move is priced separately. Cost depends on the weight and size of each unit, access at both buildings, working hours, the lifting method, distance, and any City, County or MTO permits, plus spring load limits from March to April. Quotes come back within 2–4 business hours and estimates are free. Try our Heavy Lifting and Moving Calculator for a range.

Do you move hot tubs, glass, gym equipment or hospital beds?

No. Hot tubs, glass and glazing, treadmills and other gym equipment, hospital beds and home medical equipment are jobs for a specialty moving company or supplier, as are household and office moves. Our Barrie crew rigs heavy lab, hospital-plant, test and production equipment, such as sterilizers, chambers, freezers and process skids, that needs skates, gantries or jack-and-roll.

Which areas around Barrie do you serve?

All of Barrie, plus Innisfil, Springwater, Essa and Angus, New Tecumseth and Alliston, Bradford, Orillia, Collingwood, Wasaga Beach and Midland. For labs in the GTA, see our lab equipment movers in Toronto. Send the site address with your quote request and we will confirm the crew, the route and any permits or seasonal limits.
