Heavy-capacity lift truck carrying a large machine enclosure outdoors

Rigging-Busters moves CNC machines for machine shops and manufacturers in Barrie, ON and the surrounding area, from Innisfil and Springwater to Oro-Medonte and Orillia. We are CNC machine movers and riggers: one crew locks the machine down, jacks it off its pads, rolls or forks it out, hauls it, then sets and levels it at the new address.

Own a machine shop in Barrie? Tell us what has to move and where it is going: a lathe to the next bay, a whole shop to a bigger unit in Innisfil Heights, or a sold machine to its buyer down Highway 400. This page explains how we do it, what your team prepares and what affects the price.

  • Industrial work only: CNC machines, machine tools and production equipment, never household or office contents.
  • One crew, start to finish: rigging, skidding, transport, set-in-place, levelling and millwright installation.
  • Quotes within 2–4 business hours of your request. Estimates are free.
  • Service area: Barrie and Simcoe County, Orillia, and the Highway 400 corridor south to York Region and the GTA.

CNC Machine Moving in Barrie: What We Handle

Our CNC machine moving work in Barrie covers five jobs. Book a single one, or let one crew run the whole sequence:

  • CNC machine relocation: within your building, to a new unit elsewhere in Barrie, or to a plant anywhere in Simcoe County.
  • CNC machine transport: loading, chaining down and hauling on a trailer chosen for the machine’s weight and height, with permits when the load is oversize.
  • CNC machine installation: placing and levelling the machine, then lining up its bar feeder, chip conveyor and coolant unit.
  • New machine deliveries: unloading the dealer’s truck, uncrating, and rolling the machine through your door to its pads.
  • Removals and storage: taking an old or sold machine out to a buyer’s truck, or into storage until it is sold, so the floor is clear for its replacement.

How to Move a CNC Machine in Barrie: 7 Steps

CNC moves go wrong when nobody owns a step. This is the order we follow on a Barrie job, with the person responsible for each stage:

  1. Two weeks or more ahead, the plan: you send the make, model, weight and photos; we choose the method, crew and trailer, and check whether the load needs a City, County or MTO permit.
  2. The week before, the control back-up (your programmer or the OEM): the parameter file, part programs, tool and work offsets and any PLC changes are saved, with a copy kept off the machine.
  3. The day before, fluids and tooling (your team): the coolant tank is drained, chips are cleaned out of the conveyor and pan, and tools come out of the magazine or turret.
  4. Moving morning, power off (your licensed electricians): the machine and any step-down transformer are isolated and disconnected, and the air drop is closed off.
  5. Lock-down (our crew): we fit the maker’s shipping brackets, or blocking where they are missing, so no axis can travel; the spindle head or turret is secured, and the doors, pendant and loose covers are strapped.
  6. Out the door and on the road (our crew): toe jacks lift the base onto machinery skates, the machine is rolled or forked to the trailer, chained down by its base and hauled on the route the permits allow.
  7. At the new building, set and restart: we place the machine on its pads and level it; your electricians reconnect it, and the OEM technician recommissions the control and checks the geometry before the first production part.

What Your Shop and the OEM Prepare

The control and the fluids are the customer’s side of the job, because only your people and the machine builder know the settings. Before our riggers arrive:

  • Back up the control to a USB drive or your network, and test that the files open on another computer.
  • Ask the OEM whether the control’s backup batteries should be checked before a long power-down, so axis reference positions are not lost.
  • Drain the coolant and dispose of it the way your plant normally does; a full tank sloshes and can spill on the trailer.
  • Photograph cable and hose routing, and label anything that will be unplugged.
  • Book the OEM technician’s recommissioning visit as soon as the move date is set.

How Our Crew Rigs and Skids a Machine Tool

With the axes locked and the spindle secured, we raise the base with toe jacks at the points the manufacturer specifies, set it on machinery skates and roll it out along a path we have measured. Heavier or taller machines go on a hydraulic gantry or a jack-and-roll setup, and a counterweighted forklift takes over at the dock. If a machine has to go over a wall or up to a mezzanine, the lift is booked with a licensed crane partner and included in your quote.

Only need the lift, or a move inside the building? Our industrial rigging services in Barrie cover rigging-only work.

CNC Machine Transport Permits in Barrie and Simcoe County

Most CNC machines ride within legal dimensions on a lowboy or tilt-deck trailer, so many moves need no permit. When a load is oversize, up to three road authorities can be involved, and we apply to each one the route touches:

  • City of Barrie roads: an oversize load permit, applied for online through the City’s APLI system. It is not valid until the City and the Barrie Police Service have signed it, and structure and utility clearances must be checked on site 48 hours before the move.
  • When it can travel in Barrie: not Monday to Friday from 6:30 to 9:00 a.m. or from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., not from half an hour after sunset to half an hour before sunrise, and not in poor visibility. From March 1 to April 30, commercial vehicles over 5 tonnes per axle are kept off the roads the City lists as load-restricted.
  • County of Simcoe roads: a County permit for a single trip wider than 2.6 m, higher than 4.15 m, or over the County’s length or weight limits. Allow at least 5 business days; a single-trip permit is valid for 3 consecutive days.
  • Highways 400, 11 and 26: an MTO oversize/overweight permit; the province asks for single-trip applications at least 5 business days before the trip.

Re-Levelling and OEM Recommissioning

At the new spot we set the machine on its levelling pads and bring it to level with a precision level, following the maker’s installation drawing; anchoring, where the maker calls for it, is part of our millwright installation. A heavy base settles, especially on a new slab, so plan a re-levelling check once the machine has run for a while. After your electricians reconnect power, the OEM technician recommissions the control: the axes are referenced, parameters are confirmed and accuracy is checked before you cut a first article.

Barrie’s Manufacturing Base: Automation, Tooling and Machine Shops

Invest Barrie counts more than 360 manufacturers in the city and more than 6,900 advanced manufacturing jobs in 2022. Its sub-sectors include automation, tooling and machinery manufacturing, automotive parts, plastics and rubber, structural metals, electrical components, and food and beverage. Barrie’s south end, around Welham Road, Bayview Drive and Saunders Road, is home to a cluster of machine shops and tooling firms.

The City is also courting new industry. In September 2026 the City reported that Zoning By-law 2026-076, approved to support defence-related industries, is final after an appeal was withdrawn, as Barrie works to attract defence, security, aerospace and advanced manufacturing businesses. Across the wider county, the County of Simcoe’s economic development office counts about 23,000 manufacturing employees, 14 percent of the labour force, and promotes automotive and defence among its key sectors.

New Machines Delivered to Your Dock

A new machining centre or lathe usually arrives crated or skidded on a dealer’s truck, and getting it from the truck to its pads is often left to the buyer. We meet the truck, unload with a forklift or gantry, uncrate, roll the machine inside and set it where your floor plan shows, then level it for the dealer’s technician. If an old machine is leaving the same day, it goes out first, so the new one can go straight to its spot.

Moving Your Shop to a Bigger Building: South Barrie, Innisfil Heights or Springwater

When a shop outgrows its unit, the new space may be outside the city. Innisfil Heights, the Town of Innisfil’s employment area of more than 1,600 acres on Highway 400 between Highway 89 and Innisfil Beach Road, is marketed to advanced manufacturing, agri-food processing and logistics firms. North of Barrie, Springwater’s Bertram Industrial Park on County Road 27 is about ten minutes from the city and five minutes from Highway 400.

Before the first machine leaves the old unit, check the new building against this list:

  • Slab thickness against each machine’s foundation drawing; some large machining centres and grinders need their own pad.
  • Power drops and compressed air at every machine position, installed by your electricians before moving day.
  • Door, dock and ceiling heights along the path from the truck to each spot.
  • Machine footprints marked on the floor, with room for doors, chip conveyors and maintenance access.
  • A move order that keeps your key machines running in the old unit until their new positions are ready, with storage between sites if the dates do not line up.

Moving more than the machine tools? Our factory and plant relocation in Barrie covers whole plants, from the first machine out to the last one levelled.

How to Compare Machine Moving Companies in Barrie

Quotes from machine moving companies can look alike until you ask what they include. Four questions worth putting to each one:

  • Is levelling at the new spot included, or only drop-off?
  • Who locks the axes and secures the spindle, and with what?
  • Who applies for City, County and MTO permits, and are they in the price?
  • Is the price fixed for the scope you described, and what would change it?

Have These Ready for an Exact CNC Moving Quote

Send these six details with your quote request, and we can price the move without a second round of questions:

  1. Make, model and weight of each machine; a photo of the nameplate is enough.
  2. Photos of the machine, its base and the route to the door.
  3. Both addresses, with door, dock and ceiling heights.
  4. Attachments that travel with it: bar feeder, chip conveyor, coolant unit, transformer.
  5. Target dates, and the hours each machine can be down.
  6. Who reconnects and restarts it: your electricians, the OEM or the dealer.

Quotes are in Canadian dollars (CAD), and we accept cash or cashless payment.

Barrie CNC Machine Moving: FAQ

How much does it cost to move a CNC machine?

The price depends on the machine’s weight and size, the distance, access at both buildings, attachments that travel separately, and whether the work runs after hours. In Barrie, an oversize load also needs permits and must stay off City roads during weekday rush hours, and spring load limits from March 1 to April 30 can lengthen a route. The Heavy Lifting and Moving Calculator gives a rough range.

What are the risks involved in moving a CNC machine?

The main risks are a machine lifted at the wrong points, a column or spindle head that shifts because the axes were not locked, coolant spilling in transit, and control data that is lost. Each has a fix: the maker’s lifting points and shipping brackets, a drained tank, and a tested back-up made by your team or the OEM before the power is disconnected.

What are the benefits of hiring a professional CNC machine mover?

Three stand out. You avoid buying or renting jacks, skates, a gantry and a trailer for one job. The lift is planned by riggers who work out the lifting points and centre of gravity before anything moves. And rigging, permits, hauling, placement and levelling sit with one crew, so your machinists stay on production while the machine is moved and set.

Do I need a permit to move a CNC machine in Barrie?

Only for oversize or overweight loads; most CNC machines are neither. City of Barrie roads need an oversize load permit, applied for online and valid once the City and Barrie Police Service sign it. On County of Simcoe roads, loads wider than 2.6 m, higher than 4.15 m or over the length or weight limits need a County permit, and Highway 400 needs an MTO permit.

When can an oversize load travel on Barrie roads?

A City of Barrie oversize permit is not valid on weekdays from 6:30 to 9:00 a.m. or 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., from half an hour after sunset to half an hour before sunrise, or in poor visibility. Clearances are checked on site 48 hours ahead, and from March 1 to April 30, vehicles over 5 tonnes per axle stay off load-restricted roads.

Can you move our machine shop to Innisfil Heights or a new building in south Barrie?

Yes. We plan the order so your key machines keep running in the old unit until their new spots have power, air and a suitable slab, then move them in stages, with short-term storage if the dates slip. Innisfil Heights sits on Highway 400 between Highway 89 and Innisfil Beach Road, so a load from south Barrie spends most of the trip on the highway.

How is the work split between our shop, the OEM and your crew?

Your programmer or the OEM backs up the parameters, programs and offsets, and your team drains the coolant and empties the tool magazine. Your licensed electricians disconnect the power, because electrical work for hire in Ontario needs a licensed electrical contractor. Our crew locks the axes, secures the spindle, skids, hauls and re-levels the machine, and the OEM technician recommissions the control at the new spot.

Do you move a single CNC machine, such as one lathe or a toolroom mill?

Yes. Single-machine moves are common: a lathe sold to another shop, a mill moved to make room, or a machining centre going into a new unit. One machine still gets the full lock-down, skidding and levelling, scheduled around your shift. Send the model, weight and a few photos, so we bring the right jacks, skates and trailer the first time.

Which areas around Barrie do you serve for CNC moves?

Barrie, Innisfil and Innisfil Heights, Springwater, Essa and Angus, Oro-Medonte, Orillia, New Tecumseth, Bradford West Gwillimbury, Collingwood and Midland, plus the Highway 400 corridor through East Gwillimbury, Newmarket and Aurora. For a machine going to or coming from Toronto, see our CNC machine movers in Toronto, which covers the permit rules there.

Do you offer CNC machining, CNC jobs or household moving in Barrie?

No. We do not machine parts, program CNC machines, hire operators, or sell or rent machines, and we do not move household or office contents. We move the machines themselves, along with other industrial equipment. If you are relocating a CNC machine, a machine tool or a whole machine shop in Barrie or Simcoe County, that is our work.
