Electrical cabinet moved on machinery skates by two riggers

Need heavy equipment lifted, skidded or set in place in Quebec City? Rigging-Busters provides heavy and industrial rigging for plants, machine shops and electrical rooms across Quebec City, Lévis and the surrounding region.

Our riggers take a press out of a shop, roll a transformer through a narrow door or set a generator on a roof. Each load gets its own method, chosen for its weight, centre of gravity and access.

  • Industrial rigging only: machines, presses, transformers, generators and process equipment; no household or office moves.
  • The right method for each load: skates, jacks and cribbing, hydraulic gantries, heavy forklifts or a crane pick.
  • Minimum project: 3,500 CAD before tax. Most industrial jobs cost more, and the estimate is free.
  • Fast replies: we usually reply within 2–4 working hours once we have all the details.
  • Travel planned in: Quebec City is about 250 km from Montreal; crew travel is part of the written quote.
  • Insured: $5 million in liability insurance, plus workers’ compensation coverage, with a certificate of insurance on request.

How We Lift, Jack and Skid Heavy Equipment in Quebec City

Every rigging job starts with one question: how do we raise this load without tipping it or overloading the floor? The answer depends on weight, shape and the space around it:

  • Machinery skates: once raised a few centimetres, the machine rolls to the door or to its new spot.
  • Hydraulic jacks and cribbing: the load climbs in small steps on cribbing when nothing overhead can carry it.
  • Hydraulic gantries: they pick heavy loads in mechanical rooms and in shops with no overhead crane.
  • Heavy-capacity forklifts: to load a trailer, unload at the dock or make short moves across the yard.
  • Crane picks: a mobile crane and operator from a specialist partner, planned as part of the rigging job; we do all the rigging.

Planning the Lift: Weight, Centre of Gravity and Pick Points

Machines are rarely balanced: a motor, a head or a tank pulls the weight to one side. Before the first lift, we locate the centre of gravity from the drawings, the nameplate or the manufacturer’s data. Slings and pick points are then chosen so the load stays level as it rises. On jacks, the same logic sets where each jack goes and how high the cribbing is built. This prep does not replace an engineer-sealed lift plan: if your site requires one, say so in your request.

What Our Riggers Handle in Quebec City and Lévis

We rig the heavy equipment found in plants, shops and technical buildings:

  • Machine tools, machining centres, lathes and presses (press brakes, punch presses, injection moulding machines)
  • Transformers, switchgear and electrical cabinets
  • Generators, chillers and rooftop units
  • Tanks, vessels and process equipment
  • Production line and conveyor sections

Rigging Transformers, Switchgear and Generators

A transformer is jacked, skidded to the exit, then loaded or set and levelled on its new pad. The wiring side belongs to your electrician: a licensed electrical contractor disconnects the unit before we arrive, then reconnects and tests it. Include the nameplate, the drawings with lifting points and photos of the way out.

Tight Access, Mezzanines and Rooftops

A narrow door or a low ceiling doesn’t always stop a job: the load can travel low, on skates. Mezzanine and rooftop loads usually go up by crane, through a roof opening or a wall. The capacity of the slab that receives the load must be confirmed beforehand, by your engineer if needed.

How a Rigging Job Runs, Step by Step

Whether the load stays on site or leaves on a trailer, the job always follows the same order:

  1. Your request: photos, weight, dimensions and the site address.
  2. The plan: method, gear, crew and schedule, plus any street or road permits.
  3. Shutdown on your side: your maintenance team or electrician isolates and locks out power before we arrive.
  4. Rigging: jacking, skating, a gantry or a crane pick, inside a marked-off zone around the load.
  5. Loading: if the load leaves the site, it is secured on a lowboy or a flatbed trailer.
  6. Placement and levelling: the load is set on its marked spot, levelled and aligned, ready for reconnection; millwright installation is available.

Industrial Rigging Across Quebec City, Lévis and the Beauce

Quebec City has 14 industrial parks, 4 innovation areas and 5 industrial zones, plus port areas and an airport zone. We serve the Beauport, Charlesbourg and Val-Bélair industrial parks and the Michelet and Chauveau innovation areas, among others.

South of the river, Lévis has 5,100 businesses and organizations, 800 of them in industrial parks such as Bernières, Lauzon and Pintendre. We also work in L’Ancienne-Lorette, Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures, Boischatel, Pont-Rouge, Sainte-Marie in the Beauce and Montmagny.

What Is Bringing Heavy Equipment Into the Region

Several data centres are due to start up around Quebec City between late 2026 and early 2027. In Lévis, another 60 MW data-centre building is under construction. At the CHU de Québec’s new hospital complex, the critical-care pavilion gets its keys at the end of 2026, ahead of at least eight months of fit-out. Projects like these bring generators, switchgear, chillers and heavy medical equipment into new buildings.

Street Permits, Oversize Loads and the Spring Thaw

In Quebec City, a crane or truck set up on the street needs a roadway occupation permit (French). It is requested through 311 under bylaw R.V.Q. 2786; plan for up to 10 business days.

An oversize load that leaves the site needs a special permit (French) from the MTMD, Quebec’s transport ministry, requested in its GPM system. In 2026, a specific permit costs C$141 for classes 1–3 and C$305 for classes 4–7. Classes 6 and 7 need a feasibility study, so allow a few weeks.

A load wider than 3.75 m travels with a rear escort on a road with more than one lane in the direction of travel. Above 4.5 m high, a front escort is needed.

Quebec City is in zone 1 of the spring thaw period (French), which ran from 16 March to 15 May in 2026. During that window, allowed loads drop and most overweight special permits are suspended.

If the load passes through Montreal, each borough on the route also requires a permit over 2.6 m wide or 4.15 m high. It is also required over 50 t when the haul needs a class 6 or 7 permit. Count at least 5 business days in most boroughs, or 10 in Saint-Laurent and Ville-Marie. Permits, escorts and street bookings go into the schedule before the move date.

Rigging Prices in Quebec City: What Drives the Cost

Each quote is built on the actual job. The price moves with:

  • The load: weight, size and centre of gravity; a tall or unbalanced load needs more cribbing
  • Access: doors, headroom, floor capacity, a mezzanine or a roof
  • Method: skates and jacks, a gantry, a heavy forklift or a crane pick
  • Travel: crew travel to Quebec City and the number of days on site
  • Timing: evenings, weekends or a production shutdown window
  • Street and road: roadway occupation, special permits, escorts and the thaw period

Every project costs at least 3,500 CAD, and most industrial jobs cost more. Estimates are free, and our pricing page shows how a quote is put together.

Your Rigging Quote Request: What to Send

The more complete the request, the sharper the quote. Include:

  1. Load details: weight, dimensions and the centre of gravity if known
  2. Lifting points: drawings, the nameplate or the manufacturer’s rigging instructions
  3. Photos: the equipment, then the whole route to the truck, mezzanine or roof
  4. Address and access: street, yard or dock, and the space for a truck or crane
  5. Destination: the same building, another site in the region or farther away
  6. Your dates: shutdown window, deadline and any evening or weekend limits
  7. Site rules: safety orientation and the documents your site requires

Industrial Rigging in Quebec City: Your Questions

What do industrial riggers do?

They lift, jack, skid and set heavy equipment without tipping it or damaging the building. The method follows the weight, the centre of gravity and the access on site.

How much does a rigging job cost in Quebec City?

It depends on the load, the access, the method, travel, the schedule and any permits. Every project costs at least 3,500 CAD, and most cost more. Estimates are free.

Is travel to Quebec City charged extra?

Quebec City is about 250 km from Montreal. Crew travel is planned in advance and included in your written quote, so you see the full price before you book.

Who supplies the crane for a rooftop lift?

A mobile crane and operator from a specialist partner are planned as part of the rigging job. We plan the lift with them and do all the rigging, from hooking up to setting down. We don’t rent out cranes or forklifts.

Does a crane on a Quebec City street need a permit?

Yes. Any roadway occupation by a crane or truck needs a City permit, requested through 311 (bylaw R.V.Q. 2786). Plan for up to 10 business days.

Can heavy equipment be moved during the spring thaw?

Rigging inside a building goes on all year. Road transport is what gets limited: in zone 1, which includes Quebec City, the 2026 thaw ran from 16 March to 15 May.

Can you take a transformer out of an electrical room?

Yes. We jack, skid and load transformers, switchgear and generators, then set them on their new base. Your licensed electrician handles disconnection, reconnection and testing.

Do you level and anchor the machine?

Yes. Our millwrights place each machine on its pads or anchors, level and align it, and leave it ready for your licensed electricians to reconnect.

Do you work in Lévis and the Beauce?

Yes: Lévis and its industrial parks, Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures, L’Ancienne-Lorette, Boischatel, Pont-Rouge, Sainte-Marie, Saint-Henri and Montmagny, as well as Quebec City itself.
