Crew moving a large industrial machine on steel cribbing with a heavy-capacity forklift

Need machinery movers or industrial movers in Montreal? Rigging-Busters moves machines for plants, machine shops, printers and labs across the island, Laval and the South and North Shores. We move a machine out of the building, load it on the right trailer, haul it with the permits the load needs and set it in place at the new site.

Typical requests: a lathe leaving a machine shop in Lachine, or a press bought at an auction in Anjou. Others are bigger: a printing press changing buildings in Saint-Laurent, or a production line going from Montréal-Est to a new plant in Boucherville.

  • Industrial work only: plant machinery and equipment, no residential or office moves.
  • One crew from start to finish: rigging, handling, loading, transport, set-in-place, levelling and millwright installation.
  • Minimum project: 3,500 CAD before tax. Most industrial moves cost more, and your written quote lists what is included and the price.
  • Fast answers: quotes usually within 2–4 working hours once we have all the details, and estimates are free.
  • Insured: $5 million in liability insurance that includes cargo coverage, plus workers’ compensation coverage, with a certificate of insurance on request.

How a Machinery Move Works in Montreal

Every job, from a single machine to a full plant, follows the same sequence:

  1. Scope: make, model, weight and dimensions of each machine, photos, both addresses and your deadline.
  2. Site check when needed: doors, docks, floor capacity, overhead clearance and trailer access at both ends.
  3. Handling plan: rigging method, trailer type, route, permits and any escort.
  4. Preparation: moving parts blocked, loose items removed and the machine protected for the road.
  5. Loading and transport: heavy forklift, hydraulic gantry, or a crane from a specialist partner when the lift calls for one; the load is chained and blocked before it leaves.
  6. Placement and levelling: the machine is set on its marked position in the new building and levelled, ready for reconnection and start-up, with millwright installation if you need it.

Millwright Installation and Levelling

Our millwrights place each machine on its pads or anchors, level and align it, and leave it ready for your licensed electricians to reconnect. We set anchor bolts, base plates and shims to the OEM’s foundation drawing and torque them once the machine is level. Machines too big to travel whole are taken apart at the old site and rebuilt at the new one.

Estimates are free: send your equipment list and a few photos, and we usually reply within 2–4 working hours once we have all the details.

Industrial Moving in Montreal: What We Move

We move:

Printing Press Moves

Printing presses travel in units. The press manufacturer’s technician or your press mechanic disconnects the press and marks the split points, and your licensed electricians disconnect and reconnect power. We separate the units, rig, protect and haul each one, then set it on its marks in the new pressroom and level it. Where the manufacturer asks, our millwrights bolt the units back together. The manufacturer then recommissions the press. Send the press model, the number of units and photos of the room and the exit path.

Auction Purchases and Plant Closures

Auction buyers often get only a few days to remove a machine: some Quebec auctioneers allow about 5 days, by appointment. Send the lot number, the address and the removal deadline, and we plan the rigging, loading and haul around it. When a plant closes or moves production to another site in Quebec or Ontario, we move the machines in the order the new site needs them. For auction purchases anywhere in Quebec, see auction machinery removal in Quebec (in French).

What We Don’t Do

Residential or office moves, forklift or crane rental on their own, general freight and demolition.

Heavy Machinery Transport and Permits in Quebec

Trailer choice follows the machine’s height, width and weight. A flatbed suits low machines on skids; a lowboy keeps a tall machine under Quebec’s 4.15 m height limit; a tilt-deck trailer loads a press brake or a forklift without a crane.

MTMD Special Permit

Loads over the legal size or weight need a special permit (French) from Quebec’s transport ministry (MTMD), requested through its GPM system. A specific permit, valid for one round trip within 7 days, costs C$141 for classes 1–3 and C$305 for classes 4–7 in 2026. Classes 6 (weight) and 7 (dimensions) need a feasibility study by the ministry, so allow several weeks.

Montreal Borough Permits and Street Occupation

In Montreal, each borough on the route also requires an oversize-vehicle permit (French) when the loaded vehicle is over 2.6 m wide or 4.15 m high. It is also required over 50 t when the haul needs a class 6 or 7 permit. The MTMD permit comes first, then an online request to the borough. Most boroughs want it at least 5 business days ahead; Saint-Laurent and Ville-Marie want 10. A crane or truck parked on the street needs a temporary occupation permit (French), issued in 2–10 business days depending on the borough.

Escorts and the Spring Thaw

Some loads travel with escorts: for example, a rear escort above 3.75 m wide on a road with more than one lane in the direction of travel and a front escort above 4.5 m high. During the spring thaw period (French) (16 March to 15 May in 2026 in southern Quebec), allowed loads drop and most special weight permits are suspended, so heavy hauls are best planned outside that window. Permits and escorts are planned before the move date.

Machinery Movers in Montreal: FAQ

How much do machinery movers charge in Montreal?

It depends on the number of machines, their weight and size, access at both sites, the handling method, the distance, permits and timing. The minimum project is 3,500 CAD, and most industrial moves cost more. Send an equipment list and photos for an accurate quote, usually within 2–4 working hours once we have all the details.

Do I need a permit to move an oversize machine in Quebec?

Yes, when the load exceeds the legal size or weight: a special MTMD permit through the GPM system (C$141 for classes 1–3, C$305 for classes 4–7, in 2026). In Montreal, a borough permit is also needed over 2.6 m wide or 4.15 m high. The same goes for loads over 50 t that need a class 6 or 7 permit.

How far ahead should I book an oversize move in Montreal?

Allow several weeks for a load that needs a special permit. MTMD classes 6 and 7 need a feasibility study. Most boroughs then want at least 5 business days (10 in Saint-Laurent and Ville-Marie), and a street occupation permit takes 2–10 business days. A move that needs no permit can usually be scheduled sooner.

Can heavy machinery be moved during the spring thaw?

It is harder. In southern Quebec the 2026 thaw period ran from 16 March to 15 May: allowed loads drop and most special weight permits are suspended. Plan heavy hauls before mid-March or after mid-May.

Do you install and level machines in Montreal?

Yes. Our millwrights place each machine on its pads or anchors, level and align it, and leave it ready for your licensed electricians to reconnect.

Can you pick up a machine I bought at an auction?

Yes. Removal windows are often short, sometimes 5 days. Send the lot number, the auction address, the removal deadline and the delivery address, and we plan the rigging, loading, haul and placement in your plant.

Do you move printing presses?

Yes. Presses move in units: the manufacturer’s technician or your press mechanic disconnects them and marks the split points, and your licensed electricians disconnect and reconnect power. We separate the units, rig, protect, load and transport each one, then set it on its marks and level it. Where the manufacturer asks, our millwrights bolt the units back together, and the manufacturer then recommissions the press. Send the model, the number of units and photos of the pressroom and the exit path.

Do you rent forklifts or cranes?

No. We don’t rent forklifts (with or without an operator) or cranes on their own. We move machinery, forklifts included, and a crane can be part of a rigging job we plan.

Which areas around Montreal do you serve?

The island of Montreal, Laval, the South Shore (Longueuil, Boucherville, Varennes, Saint-Hubert, Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu) and the North Shore (Mirabel, Saint-Jérôme, Blainville, Terrebonne). For Saint-Hyacinthe, Drummondville and Granby, describe the job in your quote request.
