Crew moving a large industrial machine on steel cribbing with a heavy-capacity forklift

Every heavy machinery move starts with a plan, not a truck. Before any lift we confirm the machine’s weight, centre of gravity and lifting points, the floor capacity, and the route from its foundation to the dock door. Then we choose the method: machinery skates, a hydraulic gantry, jack-and-roll, or an overhead lift by a licensed crane partner.

That planning protects your equipment, your floor and your production schedule, whether the machine is going across the plant, across Windsor or across the border.

How We Move Heavy Machinery in Windsor

Every machinery move we take on in Windsor-Essex follows the same seven steps:

  1. Job details and photos: make, model, weight, dimensions, both addresses, access and dates.
  2. Site visit when needed: doors, floors, pits, docks, lifting points and the route out of the building.
  3. Move plan and permits: method, crew and schedule. Oversize loads need an MTO single-trip permit on provincial highways, plus City of Windsor or County of Essex permits on local roads.
  4. Disconnect and lockout: your maintenance team or a licensed electrical contractor disconnects power, air, water and hydraulics.
  5. Rigging, skidding and loading with rated slings, skates, gantries or jack-and-roll; each machine is blocked and secured for transport.
  6. Transport on a trailer matched to the load, with permits and escorts for oversize loads and the border crossing planned for US deliveries.
  7. Set in place and levelling on the new footprint, ready for reconnection; millwright installation is available.

Equipment Our Crew Uses

  • Machinery skates and dollies to roll machines, moulds and press sections across the floor
  • Hydraulic gantries to lift machines where there is no overhead crane
  • Jack-and-roll systems to raise very heavy equipment in stages and roll it into position
  • Heavy-capacity lift trucks to load, unload and place machines
  • Trailers matched to each load, from tilt-decks to lowboys, for heavy machinery transport
  • Crane lifts through licensed crane partners when a job needs one

Machinery Transport and Permits in Windsor

We haul machinery and heavy equipment on trailers matched to each load and arrange the permits and escorts for oversize and wide loads. Oversized loads on Windsor streets need a City of Windsor moving permit, and the City’s Traffic Operations must approve the route at least 72 hours before the move. County roads need a County of Essex moving permit, and the County asks for applications at least 10 business days ahead. Highway 401, Highway 3 and the other provincial highways need an MTO permit, which Ontario asks carriers to request at least 5 business days before the trip.

Cross-Border Machinery Transport to Detroit and Michigan

Machines, moulds and tooling often travel between Windsor-Essex and Michigan. We plan cross-border machinery transport over the Ambassador Bridge or the Gordie Howe International Bridge, which opened in July 2026, including the oversize permits needed on each side of the border. We rig and load the machine at your plant, and your customs broker prepares the paperwork before the truck leaves so the crossing goes smoothly.

Millwright Installation and Levelling

After the move, our millwrights set each machine on its new footprint, level and align it, and leave it ready for your electricians to reconnect. Presses and other machines that must travel in sections are dismantled at the old site and reassembled at the new one, anywhere in Windsor-Essex or the rest of Ontario.

  • Aerospace, textile and woodworking machinery

Industries We Serve

Windsor-Essex is home to Stellantis’ Canadian headquarters, the NextStar Energy battery plant and more than 250 machine, tool, die and mould makers. We move equipment for automotive assembly and parts plants, mould makers and plastics moulders, metal stampers and fabricators, food processors and greenhouse packers in Leamington and Kingsville, plus equipment dealers and auction buyers.

Moving Presses, Moulds and Injection Moulding Machines

Presses and injection moulding machines carry a lot of weight in a small footprint, are often top-heavy, and may sit in pits or on their own foundations. We check the weight and centre of gravity, the bolster, ram or platens and any die or mould still in place, then decide whether the machine moves whole or in sections. Heavy sections travel on skates, a hydraulic gantry or jack-and-roll, or are lifted by a licensed crane partner, and each piece is blocked and tied down on a trailer matched to the load. Your team or the OEM handles the hydraulics, and your licensed electricians disconnect the power.

Automotive Line Moves and Retooling

For a line move or a model-change retool we match-mark and photograph every connection, plan the sequence so the line comes back up in order, move each machine, conveyor and robot base, set it to its marks, then level and align it. Your licensed electricians disconnect and reconnect power. See auto and EV plant equipment rigging in Windsor, which also covers whole-facility moves.

Machinery Moving Cost in Windsor: What Affects the Price

Every machinery move in Windsor is quoted per job, after we see the details or visit the site. The main cost drivers are:

  • Weight, size and centre of gravity of each machine, and how many items move
  • Access at both ends: door width, ceiling height, stairs, docks, pits and floor load limits
  • Method and equipment: skates, gantry, jack-and-roll or a crane (crane time is billed with minimum hours)
  • Distance, route and permits: City of Windsor, County of Essex and MTO permits, escorts for oversize loads, and the border crossing on US moves
  • Extra work: disassembly, crating, storage, re-assembly, levelling and millwright installation
  • Timing: shutdown windows, nights and weekends

Ask for the whole job in one quote (rigging, transport and set-in-place) so you can compare like with like. Quotes are in Canadian dollars (CAD).

Windsor Machinery Moving: FAQ

What are industrial machinery movers?

Industrial machinery movers, also called machine movers, industrial equipment movers or machinery riggers, relocate heavy plant equipment. The crew plans the lift, rigs and skids the machine out of the building, loads and transports it, then sets it in place and levels it at the new site. In Windsor-Essex that often means presses, moulds, CNC machines and automotive line equipment. Many movers, including Rigging-Busters, also offer millwright installation.

How much does it cost to move heavy equipment in Windsor?

Each move is priced per job. The cost depends on the weight and size of each machine, access at both ends, the lifting method, distance and permits, and timing. Cross-border moves also include the border crossing and US permits. Use our Heavy Lifting and Moving Calculator for a rough range, or send the job details for an exact quote.

Do you move machinery between Windsor and Detroit or elsewhere in the US?

Yes. We haul machinery between Windsor-Essex and Detroit, the rest of Michigan and other US states, over the Ambassador Bridge or the Gordie Howe International Bridge, which opened in July 2026. Oversize loads need permits on both sides of the border. We rig and load the machine at your plant, and your customs broker prepares the paperwork before the truck leaves.

How far ahead should I book a machinery move in Windsor?

As early as you can. On Windsor streets, the City’s Traffic Operations must approve an oversized load route at least 72 hours before the move. The County of Essex asks for moving permit applications at least 10 business days ahead, and Ontario asks carriers to apply for an MTO permit at least 5 business days before the trip. Line moves and retools are planned further ahead, around your shutdown.

Can you move stamping presses, injection moulding machines and moulds?

Yes. Presses, injection moulding machines, moulds and dies are among the most common machines in Windsor-Essex plants. We check the weight, centre of gravity, bolster or platens and any pit or foundation, then move the machine whole or in sections on skates, a hydraulic gantry or jack-and-roll, or with a licensed crane partner. Each piece is blocked and secured on a trailer matched to the load.

Do you move small machines in Windsor?

Yes. We move single machines as well as full lines: a small press, a lathe, a CNC machine, a mould or a piece of process equipment, within your plant, between buildings or onto a truck. Send the make, model, weight and photos of the machine and the route out, and we will plan the right method and send you a quote.

Do you install and level machinery after the move?

Yes. Our millwrights set each machine on its new footprint, level and align it, and leave it ready for your electricians to reconnect. Presses and machines that travel in sections are dismantled at the old site and reassembled at the new one. In Ontario, electrical work for hire needs a licensed electrical contractor, so your licensed electricians disconnect and reconnect the power.

What are machinery riggers?

Machinery riggers plan and carry out the lift itself. They find the centre of gravity, choose rated slings and lifting points, and raise, lower or skid the load with skates, gantries or jack-and-roll. Rigging-only jobs are common, for example re-laying out a line or setting a new press your dealer has delivered. See industrial rigging services in Windsor.

Which areas around Windsor do you serve?

All of Windsor, from east Windsor and Ford City to the Walker Road corridor and the west-end industrial lands, plus Essex County: Tecumseh and Oldcastle, LaSalle, Amherstburg, Lakeshore, Essex, Kingsville and Leamington, and Chatham-Kent. We also move machinery between Windsor and Sarnia, London and the rest of southwestern Ontario, and across the border to Detroit and Michigan.

Do you move household or office furniture?

No. Rigging-Busters moves industrial machinery and plant equipment only, such as presses, moulds, CNC machines, production lines and transformers. For a home, apartment or office move in Windsor, please contact a residential or commercial moving company. If you need a machine, a line or a whole plant moved, we are the team to call.
